Sales reps are not a cure all where you can offload all the responsibility on them to make all the sales while you sit back and fill orders. You’re going to need to bring something more to the table than ‘if you sell I pay you, if you don’t, I don’t pay you’. It’s not a no-risk game for you – if you treat it that way you’ll never get a sales rep.
As for commission, you need something more than pulling numbers out of the air to justify the salary range you’ve given them.

Just like in all business relationships, people should be treated with respect. I hope I didn’t imply otherwise. That said, traditionally the sales rep is a very independent contractor who works for many organizations. I’ve seen very strong relationships and very abused ones. But, I guess that is business. You’re right. Money alone doesn’t do it. Training. Information. Follow up. Professionalism. Respect. Goals. Honesty. All these are critical to success in this relationship.
