How To Search & Use Twitter for Meaningful Content

by Chris Brown on Thursday, January 15, 2009

Do you struggle with the explosion of Twitter like I do? I know it’s smart to tweet about a blog post, but sometimes I get caught up in all the fray of Twitter. Do you?

How to find meaningful content? How to not send a direct out to the masses by accident? Learning all the initials and aps and clever uses for marketing and connecting with your community?

Here’s a few things I’ve gathered that have helped me with Twitter. Please leave a comment with things that you do with Twitter to speed up the learning curve and make it easier. The only way we can learn about this is from each other!

Search Twitter: I’ve tried to find people when I’m in Twitter, but more often I want to read about a subject.

tweetdeck gets downloaded on to your computer and allows you to separate the conversation into direct responses and general discussion. Lots of columns so it’s easier to follow. You can even do some key word searching separation which also helps me.

twitpic: I started using this last summer, but then changed my twitter name this past fall. Since then it’s difficult to access both sets of twitpic account photos (chrisbrown330 and cmcbrown) and I’ve hestitated using it as much. It’s a cool way to enhance your twitter posts visually. And you can take a photo with your phone and send it to an address that automatically tweets for you.

twhirl is a download that goes on your desktop too, but only takes a small portion of your screen to view and interact with. If you’re used to seeing little IM images pop up from your email, you might prefer this to tweetdeck which takes over the whole window.

What other application for Twitter do you use that helps to sort out the information or messages?

I’m guilty of either tweeting a lot or never so I’m a huge fan of http://www.tweetlater.com. This web-based tool offers a few benefits but the most useful is the ability to load up your tweets then schedule when you want them to post. or use the “distribute” tool which automatically spaces your tweets.
